About, Mayoyo

Mbulelo Mbiphi also known as Old John Mayoyo is a GQ award-winning creative storyteller through music, style, art and culture and a North West University graduate. Born on 11 December 1999 and bred in the City of Matlosana, near a mining town called Klerksdorp. He started DJing at a tender age of 12 years old. His late father, Simon Kholisile Mbiphi, may he continue to rest in peace, was a huge fan of pop-culture holistically and was a big lover of music. Mayoyo was raised by a single hard-working mother who instilled in him at a young age the power of education.

Mayoyo often describes himself as a person who is “addicted to sounds”

He has an eclectic musical taste and ranges from House Music, Kwaito, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Amapiano and Rap music. Growing up he was influenced by spinners like 2lani Da Warrior, Kat La Kat, DJ Shimza, Black Motion and more. Mayoyo has been featured in various pozitions at home which in MooBar Rio Casino, Goodfellas Night Club, Swingles Pub & Chesanyama, BLK Lounge and Re Koafela Restaurant. Currently he is a resident DJ at G Spot Car Wash and Chesanyama in Klerksdorp, North West and hosts monthly instalments of “Deep Faraza” and he is also a resident DJ on Star FM for weekly instalments on a show called “The Ladies Night Show” every thursdays hosted by Thato Mmatli & Bokamosa Selowane.

Mayoyo has been featured on various dancefloors around and outside his hometown which includes The Kitcheners Bar, The Playground Market, The Great Dane and Art on main on various events hosted by an event agency based in Johannesburg called “73O X DIKATARA”. He has shared a stage with the likes of DJ Christos, Ralf GUM, Maglera Doe Boy, Scotts Maphuma, DJ Maphorisa, Thebe, DJ Kyotic, Ezra, Trompies, Marcus Harvey, The Qwellers, Que DJ, Sun El Musician, Thabo Phalatse Reece Madlisa just to mention a few.

In Primary School, P.A. Theron (Stilfontein) Mayoyo’s friend’s dad, Bra Spenza who was a school transport driver as well as a local tarven owner, Studio59. This is where, Mbulelo saw his first DJ controller nicknamed “di-remotes” in the township, and a full set of sound systems with huge amplifiers. Initially, it was difficult for, Mbulelo to infiltrate the scene because in Primary School and under-aged. Although, this didn’t stop him from pursuing music. He started visiting, Mazwi every weekend sometimes even helping with his Tarven duties such as packing crates and alcohol in the fridges just so he could at least sneak and hour or two of practice before resident DJs came later on the day. This is how much he loved music and pop-culture.
